How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?
Dickinson has prepared me for both my professional and personal life after graduation. Dickinson’s
liberal arts education helped me grow my technical skills, so I can accurately and intelligently apply data analytics techniques to produce helpful models, as well as my soft skills, so I can explain the created models and their results to audiences with different technical backgrounds in a way they understand. By providing opportunities to strengthen these skills, Dickinson has prepared me to tackle all aspects of my future career. While at Dickinson, I was given the chance to
study abroad in
Norwich, England, where I learned more about other cultures and in turn about the United States through their perspective. This taught me how to work with people of different backgrounds and learn ways to understand their stories. Additionally, my independence and confidence in myself flourished as I navigated living on my own and balancing my academics and providing for myself.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?
Broadly speaking, Dickinson has prepared me for life after graduation by providing me with an environment where I was constantly challenged out of my comfort zone. This fostered growth in areas where I feel I lacked and needed to strengthen myself for a successful career and satisfying life ahead.
In particular, at Dickinson, I was able to explore the different fields of computer science and mathematics, my primary areas of study. Because Dickinson encourages interdisciplinary research, I was able to ultimately find bioinformatics as a research area where I could use my quantitative skills to make an impact on the lives of people around the world. Beyond this, Dickinson allowed me to forge relationships with a variety of brilliant peers from whom I learned so much and in turn gained confidence in crafting my own identity as a student. I was also able to cultivate a lot of mental fortitude and resilience by balancing my work alongside my education. For instance, I was an RA during my second year and walked onto the track team during the second semester of sophomore year. These two years allowed me to enter into roles which I would not have imagined being in during high school. I had never been in charge of the care of a large number of students, and had never formally trained for a sport in my life. I was fortunate enough to have been allowed to participate in both, and I quickly progressed and excelled in both roles according to my own yardstick. Thus, Dickinson allowed me to learn that it is never too late to enter into roles where you think you have no experience, because as cliche as it sounds, life is limited and you should try to live each day to its fullest.

Dickinson has really helped me grow, both personally and professionally. The classes pushed me to think critically and communicate clearly, but it was the people and experiences like working closely with professors, studying abroad and getting involved on campus that made the biggest impact.
